The New Yorker Hits the Road
by Michael Yessis | 04.12.05 | 9:22 PM ET
The day the mailman delivers my copy of The New Yorker is always a happy day—yes, I’m one of those bores who reads every issue from cover to cover. But I’m particularly excited about next week’s “Journeys” issue, which features an impressive lineup of literary firepower.

William Langewiesche writes about the Baghdad hotel where he is staying in the May issue of the Atlantic Monthly. The Ritz-Carlton it’s not. “The [neighborhood] guards come under fire from traffic on the boulevard, but this is considered to be minor stuff, which they answer by enthusiastically firing back,” he writes. “I can mention such details without concern for the consequences, because nearly everyone in Baghdad knows about this place already. Mortar rounds fly overhead destined for the fortified Green Zone, about a half mile away across the Tigris River, and several car bombs have exploded nearby (one recently with the force to blow out windows here), but so far no building in the compound has suffered a direct rocket attack.” A portion of the article is available online.

Parag Khanna’s recent trip to Lahore, Pakistan—he traveled with his father, who was returning to the place he was born for the first time since the 1947 partition that created the country—was a revelation. As an American of Indian descent, Khanna wondered how he and his family would be received in Pakistan. The surprises began the moment they arrived.

Tony Perrottet: the Michael Jordan of Travel Writers
by Jim Benning | 04.01.05 | 12:16 AM ET
How’s that, you ask? The author of Route 66 A.D. is the first travel writer we’ve heard of to land a real-life footwear endorsement deal. That’s right. Michael Jordan-style. At least sort of. Nike didn’t come calling with plans for an “Air Perrottet” sneaker or billboards of the writer bravely touring the ruins at Ephesus. But Rockport recently offered to pay him to wear their new line of travel shoes and do readings in places like the Macy’s shoe department. He jumped at the chance.

David Letterman’s Top Ten list Tuesday featured the “Top Ten Ways Airlines Are Cutting Back.” Number 10? “Pilots have to pay for their inflight cocktails.” Rim shot. The rest of the list can be read here. Jay Leno had a good one-liner in a segment on company slogans. Regarding Greyhound’s “Leave the Driving to Us,” he quipped, “That’s certainly better than their first idea, ‘The Drifter’s Choice.’” Having just spent a couple of days on a Greyhound bus en route to Juarez, Mexico, sitting in front of a guy who was traveling with only a plastic grocery bag and who was yelling at nobody in particular about dolphins in the desert, I can confirm that drifters do have a soft spot for the Greyhound.
